Cutting and Stacking Machine
BackgroundThe customer is a manufacturer of lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries. It was looking at ways of improving motion control of its lithium battery cutting and stacking machine, which is a critical part of the production process for batteries. The machine is predominantly used to coil electrode sheets with pre-cut tabs, cut the sheets and combine them with separators to form a composite strip. This composite strip is then stacked into battery cells at high speed.
The Challenge
The battery cutting and stacking machine employs touchscreens for operators. However, the manufacturer found that traditional HMIs provided insufficient performance, creating problems with lag times and crashes. The customer was looking for a responsive and easy to manage solution that communicates directly with its other systems without the need for an industrial computer, reducing the risk of delays and errors.
The Benefits
FLEXEMATiC solution enabled the customer to replace its previous HMI plus industrial computer solution with a single touchscreen for direct data exchange with the MES system, greatly enhancing transmission efficiency. The smart touchscreen provides 14000+ variables, 300+ screens, and smooth operation of FPad, solving the problems of lag and crashes that can occur with traditional touchscreens. The configuration software has been developed based on object-oriented programming, allowing customers to create repetitive screens such as IO monitoring in batches using the repeater function. The HMI was available for fast delivery to the customer.
The Solution
With a cutting speed of 180 pcs/min, tension fluctuation of ±5%, edge alignment of ±0.1 mm and a stacking rate of 0.5 seconds per piece, the application required a highly sensitive and user-friendly touchscreen and HMI. FLEXEMATiC supplied its latest generation FP916R intelligent touchscreen, providing a direct interface for data exchange between the customer’s management systems and the PLCs via tag communication.
